Riana felt relieved that her bullet wounds weren’t throbbing anymore, and grateful for the superior healing rates of Sibyls. Flesh wounds weren’t much of a problem, if they got proper tending. She was tired, though, and jumpy way down inside. Everything was happening too fast, and she felt like she was losing control of her life and her little corner of the world.

Bullets. She rubbed her side. Somebody shot at us.

She was deliberately not turning around to look at Creed, who was far too sexy in his jeans and white shirt. That man could fill out his clothes in the most perfect way. If she saw him, if he was looking at her with that same intensity and concern, she would just melt into his arms. That wouldn’t be wise, given Cynda and Merilee’s doubts about him. Dani and crew would probably think poorly of her judgment, too. Unless—no, until—the Mothers gave approval for the risky, unusual relationship, all the Sibyls who knew Creed would worry that Riana’s feelings were blinding her to the dangers his other posed.

Also, Riana felt a bit guilty for questioning Creed the way they had questioned Herbert. No doubt he realized what his fate might have been had he not won her interest and trust. The sight of Mother Yana’s wolves made Riana nervous in a whole new way.

What if the Mothers one day demanded that Creed be sent to Ireland, Greece, or Russia? Could she do it? And what would happen to him if the Mothers claimed him?

Better that than the order to kill him. I know I couldn’t obey that instruction.

Dani was saying something about warped times calling for warped measures. She jerked her face mask out of her belt and jammed it over her head. “It’s been fun, but we need to roll. I need at least a little sleep before making morning rounds.”

Shell and Maura said their goodbyes, too, and Riana saw the South Manhattan triad to the door. Once she got the door closed and locked, she turned to her own pestle and broom. “Cynda, are you okay?”

Cynda glanced down at her leg and pulled off her bandage. She didn’t bother trying to throw it away. She just dropped it on the floor. “Looks okay. It’s stopped hurting, so that’s a good sign.”

Merilee patted down her leathers. “I still don’t think I got hit anywhere. If I did, I just got nicked.”

Riana closed the distance between them and, keeping her eyes studiously away from Creed and Andy, she took Cynda’s hands into her own.

Cynda looked at her steadily, her eyes asking, What, boss?

“Thank you for pulling me out of that cemetery.” She hugged Cynda, then Merilee. “I don’t know how you got me over that fence.”

“Muscle and air,” Merilee said as she let go of Riana. She laughed. “Maybe you should dial back a notch on the bagels and cream cheese at breakfast, though.”

“Pick, pick, pick,” Cynda grumbled. “Next you’ll be calling her a fat-ass, too.”

Riana held back a groan. “We all need to sleep.
